In the mid-80's, despite the wonders of MTV, gravity-defying hair mousse, and that strangely familiar looking guy on Happy Days, television was just not all that interesting to watch (save for General Hospital). And computers had not planted their program-perfect little brainwashing bits & bytes into every single home just yet. I needed to find some kind of creative, legal way of keeping myself busy after school. As a child, I fell in love with 70's comedy albums by geniuses like Monty Python, Cheech & Chong, and Steve Martin. For years, I dreamed I could create something with a similar kind of sonic insanity and although I was just a high school student with no real writing experience, I found myself feverishly scribbling down strange script ideas and coming up with goofball characters that I thought perhaps I could play. My bedroom turned into a simple, but fairly serious little recording studio with Manfred, my ultra-cool, cow colored cat standing by to give me meow-ral support. By the end of 1986, I'd put together a stockpile of some pretty diverse material, but I had absolutely no idea what to do with it. Christmas was just a few weeks away and I'd been so busy recording that I hadn't done a lick of shopping yet. Then it suddenly came, my holiday decree ... "I must assemble a 60-minute audio variety program made up of all this stuff. I shall copy it onto many cassettes," (the only format I could afford), "put a rubber chicken on the cover, and give the tapes to friends and family as gifts!"
"Merry Christmas everyone! You're all getting the same thing! I know you're gonna love it, because you all love me!"
And so the impersonal, yet intimately hilarious Mass Produced Cassette, or M.P.C., was born. Never before released on any digital medium, these original 1985-88 recordings were made using almost every conceivable type of analog tape format and production technique. With the advent of today's computer audio tools, giant steps have been taken to improve the quality, continuity, and above all, the oddinuity of every single track. A special thank you to Blackdog Recording Studios for providing me with such a comfy facility in which to sort out the miles of tape. Three volumes of thanks must go to all the comedic and musical contributors featured on this record ... and I'm so sorry Geddy, but I was just a wacky young lad who really loved your band! - M.D.G.
